The most important element to an ignition system is timing. It's crucial that the air and fuel being sent into the cylinder ignite at the right time. Pistons moving up and down in the cylinder are how an engine produces power. This happens because the air and fuel combust at the right moment, just as the piston is finishing it's upward "compression stroke". Each cylinder has a spark plug that generates spark. An ignition coil generates the voltage required to make the spark and the distributor distributes the voltage to each cylinder. In modern cars, the ECU controls the distribution of the voltage and distributors are not needed.
